Welcome to the Research Centre for Environmental History and Policy (RCEHP) website. We were originally established in 1999 and the Research Centre has always been strongly inter-disciplinary in outlook and research, looking to combine the best research in the Humanities and the Sciences to further advance our knowledge and understanding to the environment. By learning from the past we can inform future policy decisions.

The management board of the Research Centre comprises internationally-recognised scholars from the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Natural Sciences, and the School of Law.

The Research Centre is also home to the commercial venture History Tomorrow.

The Research Centre

The Research Centre is fundamentally interdisciplinary in both concept and practice. Its research involves input from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including History, Politics, the Environmental Sciences, Law, Philosophy, and Environmental Economics. Much of this research directly feeds back into our practice-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Environmental History modules can now be studied during all four years of an undergraduate B.A. degree and we run a very successful and popular Master of Research (M.Res) postgraduate degree programme. This combines four taught modules with a specific research project in one year of study and can lead to doctoral research. The Research Centre is also currently home to seven doctoral students studying for the degree of PhD.

History Tomorrow

History Tomorrow provides commercial access to top quality historical, geoarchaeological, ecological, palaeo-environmental, and associated heritage services research. Clients include private and public businesses, local and national government agencies, schools, tourist bodies and heritage design consultants.
